Only 1:30 before game time. Do you have your wings? Number two when cooking with charcoal (yes plain Kingsford is good stuff if you do it right, a lot of the cheaper brick and cheaper lump can put some weird twangs in your food) brick or lump can produce quality high temp steaks or slow & low bbq! To add some nice flavor add some wood, but do your homework! I think Clark ‘Smokey’ Hale has one of the best books ever for the grill and Q master, “The Great American Manual on Grilling and BBQ or something like that. Last I saw you can grab a used one on Amazon for a few cents and some shipping. The most prolific thing I read in there that so many miss, is burn your wood and your charcoal to where it is literally a coal of gray ash covered glowing ember. Do that and you will find a new flavor in your cooking! Problem is so many places think heavy smoke is great, as they are trying to imitate cold smoke flavors! They are not the same! All this talk I see here about, “I want heavy smoke flavor.” I can tell you if you burn your wood and your charcoal (and I feel even lump needs to be well on it’s way to gray ash covered or you get bitter smoke even though many say not necessary) to a red ember with gray ash covering 80 to 90% minimum preferably completely covered your flavor profile will change. Many supposedly good bbq restaurants I have been in serve something with a bitter or ash flavor, which I find much less enjoyable.

April 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment Hi Brad! Thanks for your comment. I’d give Grilla Grills a hard look. Their Silverbac model is as solid as they come. The sear box on the Camp Chef is an interesting addition. Given that it’s propane powered, it would be pretty much light, turn and go. So, as you said, low maintenance. Still… with a set of grill grates, you should be able to get a sear at top temps on most pellet grills that would meet your expectations.

Really good BBQ! Barbeque is an art form, and Smoke does a great job. Everybody has their own view as to what BBQ should be, and in my opinion, Smoke offers a very tasty northern style BBQ. Good smokey flavor, nice rub, and a slightly sweet and tangy sauce.

Thank you for a very comprehensive review and all the helpful advice. I would like to know your thoughts about having the burn pot in the center area as in the Rec-Tec, or on the side. My only interest is smoking, not grilling, and I prefer even heat throughout the cooking chamber. How much difference does the location of the burn pot make? Thank you very much.
Using 100% hardwood pellets, this smoker gives you authentic, smoky flavored foods whatever you do with it, whether it’s smoking, grilling, baking, roasting, braising, or BBQing. You get the wood-fired taste all of your guests are looking forward to each time.

The construction and the elements - REC TEC Pellet grill are an investment for years, safe from corroding. Most of competitive grills look pretty on the outside and the manufacturers claim they are made of stainless steel. The truth is, only the outside part of the grill is stainless. The steel on the inside is different, and major parts are made of materials of poorer quality.

Under the lid of one of the side shelves, there’s a Side burner (12,000 BTU-per-hour input ). It is strong enough to be used for water boiling or sauce making. It is cleverly hidden under the lid, so when not using it, all you have to do is close the lid and you get plenty of free space to prepare food.

The weight of these grills is also not more than you can carry along easily. Overall, these grills are not only space friendly and budget-friendly but also one can enjoy the grilling flavor and fun as much as one can enjoy from the standard size grills.
You have to spend over 2 hours assembling this grill, for many people it’s a difficult task so it’s a good idea to consider the option of buying an assembled grill at extra charge.
The smoker also comes with a multi-fuel system, meaning that you can use propane, charcoal, and even add wood to the base layer of the smoking chamber to achieve the right smoke flavor. It comes with an aluminum veg basket and pot, plus its ridiculously easy to transport with cool touch handles.

Sooo many grills and smokers on the market today. Most people don't want to spend more than a few hundred bucks on a grill, but, as with many things in life, it turns out that you get what you pay for. There are lots of flimsy, low-quality stainless steel gassers loaded with seductive bells and whistles. You shell out $350 for a shiny grill with a bunch of knobs and lights, and it might look cool on the showroom floor, but be sure to take a picture when you get it home—after a year or two, that fleeting beauty will be a distant memory as you drag the rusted, rickety shell to the curb.
When you have owned your smoker grill for 5-6 years you start wondering about owning a new one. This might happen because you are facing problems with your machine and not getting the desired result. The first and primary advice in this situation remains to clean up your grill thoroughly. Open up each and every part then proceed to doing a thorough cleaning. Most of the problems like temperature inconsistency or jamming will get solved this way.

This is probably the biggest difference in characteristics and quality that you’ll see when comparing BBQ grill mats. The thickness is directly related to the amount and type of nonstick layers and is an obvious cost-cutting area in manufacture. Some grill mats are literally paper thin. This is never a good idea.

Luckily it’s not hard to find high quality grills for less than $500. Three that come to mind are the Pit Boss 71700FB Pellet Grill with Flame Broiler, the Traeger TFB29LZA Junior Elite Wood Pellet Grill and the Camp Chef Smokepro STX Pellet Grill.
Golf GPS & Range Finders First, I don't buy a $70 smoker grill and expect to get a $600 Weber. That said, this grill is sturdier than I expected. I've had more expensive grills that were significantly flimsier. The grill is also much tighter than I expected. No, it is nowhere near airtight. But, it is not a smoker; it is a smoker grill. Many reviews suggest the writer doesn't know there is a difference. The side firebox works great to smoke food with indirect heat and the grill holds temperature fairly well. By that, I mean heat loss occurs steadily, but somewhat quickly, as the fuel source burns down. This is a small grill, which, depending on your needs, is a plus or minus. It is great for 1 - 4 people. It just fit 2 racks of uncooked pork ribs, or 8 large hamburgers. The one big negative is the thermometer. While I have never had a grill which had an accurate built-in thermometer - including Webers - this one is almost useless. After 6 hours of smoking, keeping track of the temperature by the grill's thermometer, the ribs were still mostly uncooked. I tested the thermometer by hanging a remote control grilling thermometer's probe down the chimney so that it was suspended in the cooking chamber. I know this thermometer to be accurate and it recorded temperatures as much as 100 degrees below the temperature shown on the grill's thermometer. Despite its temperature probe, I suspect the grill's thermometer is picking up a lot of heat from the lid itself. So, to sum it up, it's no gold standard grill, but it is better than the price would suggest. It's small, it smokes great, but DON'T rely on its thermometer!

Being a Lodge, it’s built to last a lifetime. Clean up is easy with the coal tray sliding out for ash disposal, it creates even heat for cooking and it holds the heat well, it features adjustable grates, and the food tastes great. Users recommend spraying with a cooking spray to keep it seasoned and any rust at bay.
Expand all (84) Tim Heffernan Jason W. voted for this review Second, grates come in a range of materials: thin wire (usually nickel-plated or stainless steel, less commonly aluminum), plain cast iron, porcelain-coated cast iron (more rust resistant), and massive, welded stainless-steel rods (as thick as a stick of chalk, or even a thumb). Manufacturers push the “heavier is better” line, but we found a lot of debate among professionals. A strong contingent among the pro reviewers at AmazingRibs.com, for example, favors the cheap, thin wires, because they expose more meat to the searing heat of the flames. Joe Salvaggio likes porcelainized cast iron because in his opinion it holds and delivers heat better than the even heavier stainless rods on his top-end wares. Porcelainized cast iron is now predominant on grills ranging from $300 to over $1,000—we noted that all our eventual contenders featured it—so we didn’t have much choice available to us, anyway.
