I have three main cooking sources for grilling and barbecuing: A Pitts and Spitts custom built barbecue pit, about $3,000 with shipping; a Cookshack electric smoker, about $800, and my Weber Performer, about $400 with the gas tank and line. Over the course of four days, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. In the real world, a high BTU does not necessary mean the grill is powerful. An absurdly high BTU probably means the grill can’t hold heat very well, so the cooking surface won’t be heated consistently or evenly. To load the gas cylinder you open the front door and move the cylinder into the compartment upon which the cylinder falls through the large circular opening in the compartment floor until the bottom of the tank hits the surface of your deck or whatever surface your grill is placed on. The cylinder must now be lifted up about 3 inches to try to hook the tank guard on to the bottom clamp of the tank weighing device. Since the compartment is compact, the only way I could raise the tank was to put a 2X4 under the tank and pry it up in to position. The clamp must then go in the longer opening in the guard which is wider at that point because it has a rolled surface for lifting the tank. The clamp which is straight and not wide enough jams with the guard surface which is round so its difficult to remove the tank from the clamp. This unworkable tank installation and securing design needs to be redone. It’s hard to believe a grill with such overall excellent design and construction could totally fall on its face with the design of something as mundane as a system for easily installing and securing the propane tank.
