Decided that moving these beasts was a little challenging so I bought a Backwoods Party 10 years ago and loved it. But basically have about worn it out. And as I got older I don’t enjoy getting up at 2 AM and then having to get up every couple of hours, after the 45 minutes of getting it ready at 2 AM, to check it and feed it. I also bought a smaller lightly used Open Range, The Good One. Used their recommended method the first time I cooked with it and hated the Q off of it so bad most of it was wasted, wife hated it too and the son ate most of it. It was extremely ash/strong smoke flavored!

Somethings changed...there is very little (if any) smoke flavor to the pulled pork now and I don't think there was any sauce on the two pounds we bought for carry out. It was also charred a lot - like maybe a newbie thought char means BBQ? - not fatty though so that's still good.

A cast iron smoker and a stainless steel smoker both benefit from seasoning. Cast iron has high maintenance demands, but if you love it, then you’re probably willing to make the sacrifice. Keep in mind, preventing a skillet from rusting is much easier than keeping a big smoker from rusting. So, if you have plans of passing on your smoker to your great, great grandchildren as a magical flavor machine, keep in mind that your offspring are expected to have much longer lives than any smoker or grill on today’s market.

My 18 year old Weber Genesis Silver C is in great shape despite the hot inland desert sun of San Bernardino and the winter rains from being at the foot of the San Bernardino mountains. It has a cover but it is off 80% of the time. I had to replace the ignition button some years ago. I also replaced the flavorizer bars about five years ago. And, I upgraded my original cast iron grates a couple of years ago to porcelainized iron. That is not bad for a grill that will be old enough to vote in just three years. The burner has stood up well and is still in good condition. The box, tables, and side burner are all top notch as well. Only dissapointment is that the warming rack and shelf are coated metal that flakes off and corrodes rather quickly.
