Louisiana Pellet Smokers boast a direct fire feature for grilling, as do Yoder smokers. However, I’m with you in that a grill is a grill and a smoker is a smoker. GMGs are very popular down here on the FBA circuit. However, most folks do find that they don’t produce the amount of smoke preferred for competition meats (which, in truth is a complaint about many pellet smokers). This is why stick burners and “some” gravity feds get a boost in rep among competition cook teams. That said, I do see folks happily using pellet smokers, and some win with them. One “trick” I see used now and again to boost the smoke output on a pellet smoker is to use one of those smoke tubes… like the A-maze-n Tube Smoker. Char-Broil Performance 475 Ordered this last week and received it today. My family usually heads out for yakiniku once a week and it's great stuff, but gets a bit pricey after a while. So I started looking around for a grill and found this little green gem. I took it right out of the box (and out of it's carry bag) and set it on top of a grill pad lying on top of my dining table. I put about 10 pieces of coal in it, put the lighter gel in the catch and lit it up. I plugged in the fan and cranked it high per the instructions and ended up putting out the fire. So I lit the gel again and let the charcoal sit on it for a minute before turning it on again. There was a good puff of smoke for the first five minutes, but our dining room opens to the back yard so I opened the sliding glass door to air the smoke out. After that, the smoke was barely noticeable.

Hey John – great question. My experience is that I use maybe 8 lbs of pellets for a 7 or 8 hour cook at 275 degrees. Pellet grills are relatively fuel efficient. The brand of pellet you choose will play into this. Cost for pellets varies by manufacturer, similar to charcoal. I think you’ll find them very efficient if you’re just firing them up for high heat, shorter grilling sessions.
