Cooking temp ranges from 160°F to 475°F In reading through the comments section, it seems the recommendations have shifted over time. As it stands today, which smoker would you go with and why: GMG Jim Bowie, Traeger Pro 34, or the RecTec? I like the cooking space of the Traeger Pro 34, but the other 2 seem to have more bells and whistles. I’ve been smoking about 5yrs, so not a pro but not a beginner. Currently have a 10+ year old Traeger Lil Tex elite hand-me down that is ready to give up the ghost. Would appreciate your thoughts!

How Does a Pellet Grill Work This is the versatile product, offering a rotisserie kit. I know, I know, no one likes to read the instruction manual, but even as an expert you see the advantages learning the specifics of your grill. Reading the manual is key. Generally, you should not use water to clean the pellet smokers, so keep your hose pipe far away. These smokers have digital controllers, a motorized auger, a fan and an igniter rod for the fire pot. These parts will get destroyed if they come into contact with water. You should gently dry scrub the dirt off these parts, making sure not to disassemble any parts. Cleaning the thermostat will also prove essential; otherwise, it may read temperatures inaccurately.

Heat delivery must be calculated by BTU per square inch, or "heat flux", something they never tell you. To guesstimate how much punch a grill has, calculate the flux. Divide the BTU by the square inches on the primary cooking surface. Do not include "warming" racks. So the a four burner grill that produces 48,000 BTU and has 500 square inches primary cooking surface, produces 89 BTU per square inch per hour, or a heat flux of 96. Another grill with five burners generates 52,500 BTU under 650 square inches of grates, or 81 BTU per square inch per hour or a flux of 81. The bigger unit with higher BTU rating delivers less heat to the food. Typical flux is about 85.

Thank you, Kevin. Question…how long does it take to get a pellet grill to sear temps…only to then back it down to cook the steak? And good info on the Camp Chef…i had assumed the sear box worked based on the pellets…so i would need a propane tank in addition to the sear box?

Menu Large water pan: The water pan holds a large amount of water, and on a medium temperature, the water won’t need to be refilled more than every 5 hours.
Also known as the snake technique, the mud pan concept is a clever means of creating a slow, steady burn. Some people place the mud pan in the firebox while others position it on one side of the smokebox.
Combos Remember that the price alone doesn’t guarantee the best pellet smoker. Couple of design flaws: The lid fits in the main body, not over. As the cover is complete crap there is a lot of moisture that ends up inside.
To smoke the meat, all you have to do is light up a small fire in the firebox. Airflow in the firebox is rigidly controlled, and so the smoke plus the heat from the fire are conveyed to the smoking chamber via an opening or a connecting pipe.

Brinkmann's Trailmaster 57-Inch Vertical Smoker is cheaply made to keep its price down, so it faces durability issues, but the vertical design allows heat and smoke to go where they naturally want to go: up and out the chimney, producing more even heat throughout. This also makes it easy to put in a water pan, a good addition that helps keep meat moist and attracts smoke. It's just a better design. Plus, this model has plenty of capacity.

Of course I also took a careful look at the grills in a much lower price range. Plenty of people are looking for a best cheap gas grill that gets good reviews. You need to know that they are characterized by much lower quality and durability, but I am perfectly aware that not everyone needs a durable grill for 10 years or more. Still, gas grills in this budget category can live up to the expectations when it comes to cooking.

Show all A marinade has two purposes: to add flavor and to tenderize. Meat should be marinated for an hour at the absolute minimum — overnight is better. Gas is explosive. It is dangerous. You must leave the lid open when you ignite it. If gas is under a closed hood, when it ignites it can blow that lid back with surprising force. Gas is heavier than air. If your grill flames out due to wind, a common occurrence, remember that the jets are still open and gas is filling the lower chamber. It can pool up and if you hit the ignition, even if the hood is up, there can be a violent explosion. Watch the video at right with Hannah Storm, an ESPN reporter.
