“Comments For The Magnetic Laundry System laundry magnets scam”

One of the most pressing considerations that you may be thinking about is how this system works. After all, just the idea of a magnet cleaning your clothes seems ridiculous. However, there is a science behind it that has not only been tested, but proven to work as well.
I got an email today about these magnets, from a craft supply company that unfortunately occasionally sends me crap like this. I knew immediately it was nonsense, but since I felt like amusing myself a bit, I thought I would look into it, and quickly found this site.
With this product, you can finally get rid of those chemical detergents and seemingly “all-natural” formulas that are still laden with carcinogens. The Water Liberty Magnetic Laundry System is also meant to last – you won’t need to waste more money in purchasing more magnets because your original product is mean to last for 50 years.
There’s even another water clarifier flocculant called “Clarity” (similar to Adya Clarity, get it?) sold on Amazon.com for just $14.11 for half a liter. Once again, this is a fraction of the price of Water Liberty’s Adya Clarity, which is really just an over-hyped water clarifier.
In fact, in the entire Water Liberty / Adya Clarity “clinical trial” report, there is astonishingly no mention whatsoever of ICP-MS testing of human blood, urine or even hair samples. No methodologies using ICP-MS are described at all.
PATENTED AND INDEPENDENTLY PROVEN…There is no other non-detergent laundry technology in existence that has two United States Patents and has been proven in Independent Laboratory Testing to clean as well as chemical laundry detergent. This is truly different from the common laundry ball or washer ball products may have heard of. You have never seen, heard about or tried anything like it before!
Our Nano products allow you to clean virtually any surface using just water! So not only is it an eco friendly replacement to paper towels, but you won’t have to use all those harsh chemicals when wiping down surfaces.

It’s hard to say how many of the folks selling detergent placebos know about their bogus nature. Some are probably just as taken in as their customers. Others, like The AwareHouse (which calls their product The Emperor’s New Detergent) or Judy & Company (which sells a product they’ve dubbed “Snake Oils” which “have specially treated waters called Structured Waters”) probably sleep well at night despite vending bunk.
Consider ordering the patented Wellness WaterTM Cup, because magnetized water should be “a vital part of our preventive health maintenance system” and the WWC “is the ONLY patented cup in which NORTH Polarity Faces Water!” (In case you didn’t know, “North pole magnetized water infuses energy back into the body, reduces acidity of the gastrointestinal tract, controls bacteria and stimulates brain activity.”)
Using cold water is obviously better for the environment (less energy used) but consider that the amazing health and environmental benefits of preventing petrochemical detergents from getting dumped into the fresh water supply and onto our skin is of far greater significance. Still, the Magnetic Laundry System plus cold water leaves (incredibly) almost no carbon footprint.
Washing clothes with less detergent is a good idea. In some cases, even washing clothes with no detergent is a good idea. But people don’t need this product to use less or no detergent. All they need is the knowledge that they don’t need to use as much detergent to get their clothes clean.
I sent an email to Kacper Postawski Companies about it and was advised to use White vinegar in the rinse cycle. I did this for several weeks, as I only do my laundry on Saturday. I have found no difference since using White vinegar in the rinse cycle.
However, different garments and materials may require that you use lower temperatures, and you may continue to do so. We have had many customers report excellent results using just cold water with the Magnetic Laundry System. For the reason outlined above, we still like to recommend hot water to users–but you ultimately have the freedom to test using the product in a variety of ways, and choose whatever option works best for your personal situation.

The first item I put in, was my pup’s dog bed that he threw up on. I didn’t even take the pillow case off of it, I just threw the whole thing in the wash. Put the magnets on each side of the washing machine basin, and washed in hot water. No stain remover or anything else, as I wanted to see what these magnets could do. It came out CLEAN, no stain, no doggie smell, nothing. Just clean and fresh smell.
I bought one last month but have never received it. My bank had sent me a notification that my card had been compromised & had been cancelled due to a purchase that I had recently made. I figure it was probably there. And now that the website is no longer up, it tells me that I have lost my money. :'(
Results showed 58 different volatile organic compounds above a concentration of 300 micrograms per cubic meter, many of which were present in more than one of the six products. For instance, a plug-in air freshener contained more than 20 different volatile organic compounds. Of these, seven are regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws. The product label lists no ingredients, and information on the Material Safety Data Sheet, required for workplace handling of chemicals, lists the contents as “mixture of perfume oils.”
Claims that commercial devices bring about significant reductions in water surface tension or lead to the various benefits that might accrue from this effect should not be taken seriously in the absence of credible performance data.
These South African authors have produced what strikes me as a very well-done study, one of the few that reports scientifically credible evidence for the effectiveness of MWT. Their series of experiments in which one of two parallel heaters was fitted with a permanent magnet device showed scale formation reductions varying over a rather wide range (17-70%), with an average of 34%.
I dont know why I’m taking the time to respond, have you used the magnets? I have for a year now and they work great!! I work in a dirty sweaty enviroment and my close come out clean as a whistle.. You don’t know what your talking about….
I saw the ad for the magnets the other day, and was tempted to buy them. The comments on the ad were glowing in praise. But the show-me skeptickism prevailed. Yes, it was shown to be too-good-to-be-true. Thanks for your testing methods!
There are going to be some substances that may not be removed by such water as those substances requires specific solvents or enzyme actions to break them down or dislodge them. This is hardly proof that these do not work. Those who use fabric softeners will certainly have inferior results because those products by nature bond to and affect the behavoir of the fibers of the clothing. Those people will also have those chemicals in their brains and the brains of their children and ought to reconsider using them.
The bait-and-switch with the nonexistent “21 day risk free trial” is a intentional effort by the company selling these magnets to capitalize on the fact that most people are too lazy to complain and and get their money back.

“Best Reviews Of The Magnetic Washing System Texas laundry magnet reviews”

I have apologized to him directly for his alleged experience, and have offered him a full and complete refund (including shipping costs) from us if he does not receive satisfaction from the reseller. will do this even though we did not sell it to him or collect the money for this order. According to his written account, Jonathan deserves, and will receive, a full refund. Though it represents a total loss to us, we believe it is absolutely the right thing to do, and the right thing for Jonathan.

I just read your site and feel equally duped…I ordered the magnets but have not received anything yet, nor have I been able to find any response from the company for about 10 days. This failure to respond got me concerned and I began to look into the company. I only found your site so far. Wow, fooled again hoping to reach beyond the norm.

Can you use the magnet ball in the dryer to dry clothes etc quicker/more effectively as many times larger items such as linen can turn into a ‘ball’ and not dry as effectively. Can it assist? Is it safe?

As I told you in email, Judy, I do not believe in posting people’s private email without their permission. But that rule goes out the window when they make false accusations against me which their private emails disprove or say things in public which contradict things they said to me in private. Continue down this path, and you will find your emails to me published on this blog for all to see, and I assure you, it won’t be pretty. Please consider this fair warning.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also warned that ethoxylated alcohol surfactants, such as APEs, may be contaminated with carcinogenic 1, 4-dioxane, which penetrates skin. Tests conducted in 1997 by the Washington Toxics Coalition found that supermarket or drugstore labels are more likely to contain APEs.

I also found another site selling the product that say it’s fabulous. I tend to ignore those if it isn’t the kind where any user can post their comments and it wasn’t. For all I know, the staff wrote the reviews.

I just want to comment here, as I represent the manufacturer of this product. I COMPLETELY disagree with Jonathan’s assessment of the product itself, and believe he has gone way overboard of his criticism of our product. I can’t spend hours on end debating point-by-point all he has posted, but I believe all of his critiques are without merit, and the vast majority of our customers would disagree with him as well. This is the first time in eight years a customer has so virulently attacked this amazing product.

Having said that, my motivation is that I believe you are ripping people off, and I don’t believe in standing by idly and watching people get ripped off. And it is more than my own personal belief — it is in fact a religious obligation handed down by the Jewish Sages, based on Leviticus 19:16, “You shall not stand idly by the blood of your brother.”

For more than fifty years, detergent makers have been collecting your money for toxic chemicals that aren’t as good at doing what our Magnetic Laundry System can do without the use or purchase of any chemicals. Detergent chemicals simply change the molecular structure of water so that it becomes “wetter” since they also know that lowering the surface tension ofthe water, allows it to clean better.

In the 1950’s, It was found that chemicals could change the molecular structure of water with the world’s first laundry detergent. It was understood that you needed to reduce the surface tension of the water to help it to clean better. The concept behind this Laundry System is that you can achieve similar results with our unique magnetic technology using no chemicals whatsoever. On an atomic level, everything is affected by magnetics. The Magnetic Laundry System cleans garments by utilizing these principles rather than harsh and expensive laundry detergent chemicals.

Water is a uniquely polar molecule, like a little magnet.  Its polar nature allows it to dissolve almost anything. In fact, water is so good at “solving” other materials that it is often called the universal solvent, and being such a good solvent you would expect that water alone would be a good cleaning agent – and you would be right.

The best that can be said of magnetic laundry balls is that they help agitate the fabrics, but you can accomplish the same thing by dropping a rock into the washing machine. Otherwise, these devices are worthless.

Among customer reviews found on Amazon.com, WaterLiberty appears to have a primarily negative reputation, with common complaints citing failure to work, concerns over the safety of its ingredients (primarily its very high aluminum content), and that the black mica is extracted using sulfuric or hydrochloric acid (we’ll talk more about this in a moment).

Through a chemical process, detergents make surfaces more susceptible to water and increase the pH levels, making it easier for water to detach the dirt from the fabrics. The downside is that most of the chemical ingredients used to achieve this are toxic to your health and the environment.*

A little digging on the Web reveals that the company which manufactures this product did publish an “independent lab test result,” which you can view here.  You can also view an “As Seen On TV” video evaluation of the product here.  [UPDATE 2010-06-22: The “As Seen on TV” video is no longer available. Perhaps Life Miracle stopped paying the advertising fee for it so they took it off the site?] Here are some problems I found with these:

There are many things that you can do to make your home a healthier and safer place. But, one thing that you certainly may not have considered is your detergent – not just changing it, but getting rid of it altogether. Recently, a new brand developed a safer, chemical-free, and just as effective alternative to detergent solutions.
Not only are these magnets pure bullshit, but they are reminiscent of another laundry scam that was making the rounds of fairs and trade shows about 7 or 8 years ago. The fraudsters were selling a pair of plastic balls with little spikes or nubs on them. The balls were filled with a liquid that even the salesmen admitted was just water. They claimed, without really explaining how, that these balls were somehow able to clean your laundry without any soap, because they “made water wetter”. That was their tag line that they repeated over and over. They charged $75 for the set of 2 balls. I walked away without buying, and a few months later I read a scientific review of these balls conducted by Consumer Reports. For those unaware, CR is very reliable and reputable, and they do not accept any advertisements or other corporate money. They are completely independent. CR compared loads washed with only the “magic balls” and water with loads washed only in water, and loads washed the regular way with detergent and water. They also did many loads using each method, using actually human-worn clothing. Volunteers wore the clothes, and had CR wash them when they got dirty. I seem to recall they washed each dirty load 20 times, not in a row, but every time it became dirty, and did this with each method. The results were that the detergent-washed clothes were clean (quite predictably), from first wash to last wash. The water-only loads seemed fairly clean at first, but toward the end of the experiment, the researchers noticed that the laundry loads were starting to look gray, and the clothes were becoming a bit stinky. The most interesting part of this experiment is that the laundry loads washed with water and the $75 balls, turned out just the same way as the water-only loads: all right at first, but later dingy and smelly.
The best that can be said of magnetic laundry balls is that they help agitate the fabrics, but you can accomplish the same thing by dropping a rock into the washing machine. Otherwise, these devices are worthless.
Another common claim is that MWT causes calcium carbonate to precipitate as aragonite, a crystalline modification of CaCO3 that is slightly less stable (and more soluble) than the much more common calcite structure. Some evidence for this has been reported in the literature[⇒]. But it is not clear that the physical properties of aragonite differ all that much from those of calcite.
The Magnetic Laundry System works under a unique means of water maintenance through direct application of magnetic force. Water has long been known as the “universal solvent”. The Laundry System incorporates powerful, specially calibrated magnetism to help alter the basic nature of water and increase its natural solvency.
The company eventually broke its public silence in December 13, announcing the shipping-out of a product just in time for Christmas. Things… were not how they seemed, however. As the comments page on their Kickstarter records in detail,[9] the first backers to receive their shiny new app-enabled pH-measuring Bluetooth-capable laundry ball on December 21st found on their doorstep… a plain laundry ball. By an entirely different company located in Korea. And a letter promising connectivity in Crystal Wash 3.0, which read (in part):
Magnetic fuel treatment devices installed in automobiles are similar in design to magnetic water treatment devices. Hydrocarbon fuel is pumped through a canister containing one or more magnets or a magnetic device is clamped to the external surface of the fuel line. Magnetic treatment of fuel, it is claimed, results in increased horsepower, increased mileage, reduced hazardous gas emissions, and longer engine life.

The Laundry Solution, a 21ST Century technology, promises to free us from environmentally-damaging and harsh laundry detergents. Laundry Balls are non-polluting, non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, color-safe, convenient, economical, do not promote static cling and will not damage fabrics. Independent investigation reveals that they are so benign as to be virtually inert. But it’s hard to dismiss the reports of strong customer satisfaction.
Right, because no one could possibly be motivated to spend the time debunking crackpot science out of a desire to elevate the general level of scientific education in the world and help prevent people from wasting their money on products that don’t work.
I bought some for myself & some as a Christmas present. At first I was happy. Now after 5-6 uses I can see my whites are grubby & the stains are not removed. I agree it’s a scam. How do I return them?
I actually applaud them for their marketing farsightedness. They don’t claim it’s the complete solution for laundry, only a replacement for detergent. So now they can peddle other nonsense for stain removal, fabric softener, etc. Most of these scams I see claim their magic rock does everything in one package.

A.  That depends on your definition of “clean” and “bright”. When comparing the usage of the MLS with laundry detergent, you need to factor in a few things. First of all, detergents are not soap. They are chemical surfactant petrochemicals derived directly from crude oil, and these chemicals are designed to not be completely rinsed out after washing your clothes. They leave behind what are called “optical brighteners” which are synthetic chemicals that reflect more light off the clothing to appear “brighter” to the eye. We do not believe that adding what are, in effect, chemical mirrors to a garment makes them cleaner. These synthetic chemicals convert UV light wavelengths into visible light, which makes laundered clothes appear whiter (although does not actually affect the cleanliness of the clothing). They’ve been found to be toxic to fish and to cause bacterial mutations. Furthermore, they can cause allergic reactions when exposed to skin that is later exposed to sunlight.

The MLS Magnetic Laundry System saves you money, helps the environment, cuts down on the amount of water you use, and is great for your health. You typically don’t need to put your clothes through a rinse cycle with the Magnetic Laundry System because there are no extra chemicals you need to rinse out. Cutting out this rinse cycle can save up to 40 gallons of water, the electricity it would take to run the cycle, and the gas used to heat the water. You also save money on softeners and static cling removers given that it is the chemicals that make your clothes stiff in the first place. Magnetic laundry systems are good for the environment because they completely cut out petrochemicals and other chemicals that your clothes would otherwise release into the atmosphere.
(That’s not even a complete list.) Some of these deal specifically with the Life Miracle Magnetic Laundry System and other magnetic laundry products, some of them deal specifically with the classic TradeNet “laundry balls” scam and products like them, and some of them deal with both. All are relevant, because Life Miracle is using exactly the same strategies for marketing its product as all the other laundry scams have used in the past (claims to revolutionary technology, reliance on anecdotal evidence, environmentalist appeal, etc.), and like the perpetrators of all those other scams, Life Miracle has offered no objective evidence that its product works.

If you want clothes that are clean, stain-free, and smell like a summer breeze, throw out the washing ball and stick with a detergent that has a good track record, like Surf excel Matic. This really is the only way to ensure your clothes are truly clean.
To many people, magnets are a complete mystery. Vendors of magnet-based scams often use this ignorance to their own advantage, so a familiarity with the basics of magnetism can aid in the detection of dubious claims.
In 2009 the Spanish consumer organization OCU made a study of “ecobolas” (a type of laundry ball marketed in Spain). It compared the efficacy of the laundry ball, normal detergent, and no detergent at all. It concluded that laundry balls were no better than using just water, and it recommended that consumers simply use a minimum amount of detergent.[6]
No more wasting money on harsh chemical detergents many of which are made of synthetic, hazardous, petroleum based chemicals – which are linked to health problems: headaches, skin sensitivities, allergies, respiratory irritations, asthma and even cancer.
One of the very few reliable reports of the therapeutic use of magnetic fields was published in 2007. “A recent study by University of Virginia researchers demonstrates that the use of an acute, localized static magnetic field of moderate strength can result in significant reduction of swelling when applied immediately after an inflammatory injury.” [link]
Does it occur to you to wonder why, if the fact that magnets can clean clothes has been known for years, there isn’t a single washing machine manufacturer anywhere in the world selling a unit which has built-in magnets to get the clothes clean? Do you think there is a vast global conspiracy funded by the laundry detergent manufacturers?
When it finished spinning, I was right there pulling out the towels and sticking my nose into them….NO SMELL….a “clean” smell – but not perfume….I was astonished and ended up sniffing almost every towel in that load….
This sounded a little far-fetched to us, but we decided to keep an open mind. If it works, Crystal Wash could revolutionize the laundry industry. After all, anyone who’s bought detergent lately has seen that the price just keeps going up. Enough, already!
Have you know about that magnetic force? Here is the product that harnessing which incredible force and also focusing it in your home washing machine to affect the whole water. At an atomic level, all the thing is affected by magnetic. You will don’t have to buy any another set of the Laundry System units because it operates from the renewable and permanent magnetic source. It is the laundry detergents will work to clean all of your clothes, but are really non-renewable petrochemicals and create you the good health and eliminate the environmental risks and potentially avoids the poisonous chemical by-products.

I have continued to use the MLS, so as of this writing, it’s been about two whole months. Which in our home is many, many loads of laundry.  Any clothing items with persistent stink have not gotten stinkier, but may have some remaining stink, which I keep under control by using the MLS along with the Atsko detergent I review here.  Or if something does seem to get stinky, I run it with Atsko.  And, of course, if the item can tolerate hot water that will go a long way.
I read of, and duplicated, an experiment, where three loads of laundry were washed in a machinefor the same amount of time: one with detergent, one with plastic laundry balls, and one with nothing but clothes. Results: the detergent one smelled fresh, but the laundry ball one was also unsoiled and smelled clean. Surprising results: so was the one with nothing at all. Long term result: I use about a third of the recommended measurement of detergent, and pre soak anything with stains. Also, the cheap detergent seems to work just as well as the expensive stuff. I only use a good amount of soap if I’m hand washing a garment.
HOW DOES IT WORK? The MLS System works under a unique means of water maintenance through direct application of magnetic force. The system assists the water to pull out the dirt, grease and odors from the fibers of your clothes without harmful chemicals that break down the fibers of your clothing. Water has long been known as the “universal solvent”. The MLS System incorporates powerful, specially calibrated magnetism to help alter the basic nature of water and increase its natural solvency.
Some commercial devices have been subjected to tests under controlled conditions. Unfortunately, the results are mixed. Duffy (1977) tested a commercial device with an internal magnet and found that it had no significant effect on the precipitation of calcium carbonate scale in a heat exchanger. According to Lipus et al. (1994), however, the scale prevention capability of their ELMAG device is proven, although they do not supply much supporting test data.

But the magnets stay “stuck” (magnetized) to the walls, which are metal, so there’s no friction. And they don’t change the molecular structure of water (which would be scary), but the charge. I’m no expert, that’s why I had my sister and her family try it out! And with excellent results! Placebo effect? Could be, but she has a little boy who sure dirties things. Maybe I’ll have her try doing a load minus the magnets to see her thoughts. I’ll post back my her reaction to this experiment if she goes along with it.
In the following examples, only a small selection of the nonsense found on MWT sites, claims that I consider false, misleading, or meaningless are denoted by “purple prose”. Because many of these fringe-science companies come and go rather frequently, it’s difficult to keep the links up-to-date. But the nonsensical claims they make seem to live on and are likely to turn up again. Links shown in {braces} are archived versions of the thankfully-now-departed.
When fuel burns, carbons are combined with oxygen and converted into their components, releasing energy. Passing fuel through a magnetic energy field which is both properly configured and focused causes the fuel to accept an induced charge. Furthermore, this application of highly focused physics will attract more oxygen molecules to the fuel resulting in more of the available fuel being completely utilized.
An extensive compilation that summarizes over 300 literature references to medical applications of magnetic fields, both permanent and alternating, can be found at the Gary Null site. The range of ailments covered seems too great to be entirely believable, but of the articles appear to be in reputable journals.
Thousands of years ago the Chinese also noted the properties of naturally occurring magnetite. When made into the shape of a needle and floated on water, the magnetite always lined up in a north south direction! By about 1000 AD, the Chinese had developed the compass that became the key to navigation. But magnets have also been used to navigate people away from reality. In the 1800s physician Anton Mesmer had people hold onto magnetized rods to attract disease out of their body. Mesmerism, as his antics came to be called, often worked. The success of the treatment had nothing to do with the magnets, rather it was based on the belief of the patient. Magnets are great placebos. Today, magnetized bracelets can be purchased to energize the gullible. And you can buy magnetic laundry disks for insertion into washing machines to allow laundry to be done without the use of detergents. The claim is that the magnets ionize water and thereby increase its cleaning ability. Nonsense.
I took one of my t-shirts and rubbed in a bunch of mud before putting it in with the first load using these magnets. It came out perfectly clean and the whole large load of laundry was perfectly clean. The clothes had no smell what so ever which was almost strange at first but really, it was the smell of fresh water and nothing else.
“Nature imparts on water a unique structure that closely interacts with the Earth’s natural paramagnetic force,” according to Nature’sAlternatives.com. “It is this force that gives rivers its oscillating snake-like appearance. It is this structure that gives water ‘life’. Living water is that which has been structured by nature and carries the life-giving force the body needs. It is this water that heals the body.” It is this water that’s gonna cost you $499.95 (U.S.)
The main benefit to this product is that you won’t ever need to use regular laundry detergent ever again. The Water Liberty magnets are designed to last you for years and with that quality, you don’t need to worry about spending extra money on a new system or detergent.
We are a very small company, and our sincere goal is to do as much good to help people and the environment as we possibly can. We believe life is far too short and precious to try to do anything but our best to help heal a very fragile planet. There are a lot of companies trying to do bad things to good people. We absolutely aren’t one of them. If you don’t like our product, fine. But please don’t make personal attacks on our character and make terrible assumptions about our intentions. That is just wrong.
A lot of articles appearing in the technical (as opposed to peer-reviewed scientific) literature are written by people whose apparent ignorance of physics and chemistry leads them to concoct unrealistic theories of how MWT might work.
I’m really pretty stunned that they seem to work. I have dogs, so I put sheets over the beds. These sheets get pretty grimy,so they were my test…yes, they came out fine, no trace of dog on them and smelling good. I’m going to be using them and not detergent from now on and would recommend them. The down side is they are not available in Canada, only through US Amazon. I am close to the border so had the shipped to an address there and avoid the extra shipping fee. Not sure why they are no longer available in Canada, apparently they used to be . In summation worth the investment.
Is there any rationale that the magnets can actually do something? Water is diamagnetic, which means that it will be repelled by a magnet. But the effect is very, very, small. If a vial of water is placed on a piece of floating Styrofoam and a strong magnet is brought close, it will slowly move away from the magnet. An interesting phenomenon, but nothing to do with cleaning ability. But there is something about the advertising for the laundry disks that is not contestable. They are guaranteed to last for fifty years, a guarantee that is indeed safe since magnets do not rot. That is more than what can be said about the claims of their miraculous cleaning properties.
A literature search for magnetic fuel treatment studies revealed that such studies are practically nonexistent. I found a total of three references. Two of these (Daly 1995; McNeely 1994) were anecdotal accounts describing the use of a magnetic treatment device to kill microorganisms in diesel fuel, a fuel treatment application not usually mentioned by magnetic fuel treatment vendors.
This was a great buy for me because it allowed me to separate the white clothes from colored clothes so easily! It’s made of a canvas material that’s quite durable. The lid itself has a hard structure, so i can lay stuff on it when it’s closed. It also has a magnet on the front to keep it closed, and Velcro on backside for attachment. Very convenient! As for the size, it’s a good 2 loads when full. I bought a couple of the square pop up laundry mesh bags from the dollar tree stores and it fits inside the hamper perfectly. That makes it easy to just pull the bags out to wash. Overall this is a great double hamper!
“When water is magnetically charged, it electrically takes on a greater ionic charge than the minerals which creates a natural magnetic attraction between the two…. Softening and better taste occurs from an actual reduction in the size of the water molecule… The small magnetized water molecule has a greater solvency and a magnetic attraction that results in cleaner bathing and washing which cleans and washes like soft water. The smaller molecular size also has less evaporative surface area which magnetically and dramatically reduces the gases and foul taste of sulfur, chlorine and fluoride, etc. [link]

Other readers pointed out numerous explanations for the fact that, in our tests, laundry balls seemed to work as well as regular detergent: (1) laundry often contains a lot of residual detergent from earlier washings; (2) the stain remover often recommended for use with laundry balls itself contains detergent; and (3) the laundry ball may work by mechanical action — the equivalent of beating clothes on a rock. And of course you can’t discount good old wishful thinking, which one suspects was a factor in the glowing evaluation by David Harris above.
Magnetic Laundry System is an innovative product to support each and everyone in the world because it is eco-friendly to save water and trees for having the healthy life as well as an environment to lead the life cycle of human beings. This magnet will help you to remove the strain from the clothes with newly launched patented technology without using the single drop of harmful chemical detergents. Because generally ingredients added in detergents are used to kill the insects, if you use that clothes washed with harmful detergent, our skin may absorb the chemicals and it may create health issues like cancer or skin irritation or heart disease or whatever it may be. But when you start using this product you can get the chance to extend the life of your clothes as well as yourself to enjoy all day long without worries.
It doesn’t say that it reduces hardness at all. It says “In conclusion, we have established that a magnetic field effect exists. Passing water through a magnetic field subsequently favours formation of aragonite rather then calcite in our experiments” where aragonite is a different crystalline structure of calcite. In particular, Table 1 specifically says that there is no effect on Na, Mg, K and Ca, which are the dominant cations that make water “hard” – msw Jun 14 ’12 at 0:04
Laundry balls/disks allegedly eliminate or greatly reduce the need for conventional laundry detergents. You get different stories on how they’re supposed to work, including a lot of hokum about “structured water” and “nanotricity” and whatnot, none of which makes much sense. The most coherent account comes from a catalog firm called Real Goods:
The most important part about a new laundry detergent, in my mind, is its effectiveness. After all, who cares how much money you saved if your gym clothes come out of the wash still smelling funky? According to the company, the MLS “is proven in authoritative independent laboratory testing to clean garments as well as chemical-based laundry detergent.” But how do you really know, unless a stain wasn’t removed from a piece of clothing?
They do a great job of removing dirt, but nothing works like bleach for making things white again.  That said, I’ll only add bleach when necessary.  This translates to about 80% of our washes being completely chemical free.  🙂
Most people use too much detergent, because (a) most people are careless about measuring the detergent and (b) the detergent manufacturers tell people to use more than they actually need to get the clothes clean.
Magnetic Laundry System is the perfect laundry detergent alternative that washes away the bacterias completely. This product is proven to eliminate 99% of bacteria, 80% of germs, and 82% of mould. Here, you can place the units in the pockets of pairs of pants or a single pair of thick socks before running the cycle.
In November 2011, the Hong Kong Consumer Council published a report on the effect of using washing liquid, washing powder and washing balls. The former two were shown to be effective in removing stains, while the washing balls were not more effective than plain water.[22]

But now to the practical test, which was conducted by my assistant Jane. (You may think it sexist that she got stuck doing the laundry, but she volunteered.) She stained various items of clothing with ketchup, chocolate, ink, grass, and “some of the purple dye I use for my hair.” That Jane! She washed three batches, one with three laundry disks from Real Goods, one with Tide, one in plain water. As advised, she used a pre-wash stain treatment on all the batches. Result: little difference among the three except that the disks did better getting rid of the grass stain. “Hm,” said Jane.
If you have dealt with cat pee, you understand this challenge.  The stuff stinks and does not come out. It might take a few washes (with detergent) OR the use of one of those pet stain treatments.  And you definitely want to get it in the washer right away.  Well, I went downstairs and noticed the smell.  I searched around and found the culprit – a bath mat.  How long had it been there? I’m not sure.  Just a few hours, most likely.  I put the bath mat in the wash and ran it JUST with the MLS and hot water.  I kid you not, the bath mat emerged ODOR FREE.  I was thrilled.

Yep. I bought the products. Washed a few loads with them. All the stains remain, of course, because the “enzymatic cleaner” is the real hook and, with it, I’m guessing most who report being “satisfied” with their results also purchased the cleaner. What disappoints me most is the smell of my clothing; hard water, antique pipes, and I get clothes that smell like iron and whatever else is lurking in the pipes. But, in addition, dirt remains – the kind under the cuffs of sleeves and on the edges of garments that have brushed up against the car covered with sooty snow….
I’ve had the magnets for about a month now.  I have done white sheets without the enzymes and the washing water got dirtier and dirtier as it washed, I was amazed.  They came out beautifully white, I was amazed.  I did my friends T shirts and underwear and same thing dirty water and they came out clean but I could smell some sweat, not much but it was there.  I have to point out that he wears his clothes until they’re really bad before washing, so this would explain the problem.  I think that by using the magnets full time the dirty water would be a lot less, I really think it’s soap/detergent that is remaining in the clothes. Someone related to me that his daughter and friends used his hot tub in their bathing suits, the boys suits are a lot of fabric.  The hot tub became a bubble bath from the detergent left in the bathing suits and he had to empty clean and refill the tub, not good.  It does say if you want a nice scent to add a couple of drops of essential oils to the dryer, I put it on a paper towel and that was nice.

The Magnetic Laundry System works under a unique means of water maintenance through direct application of magnetic force. Water has long been known as the “universal solvent”. Dear Gloria, I’ve been trying to learn about using vinegar & 2 tsp of salt as a laundry detergent replacement, and haven’t found any studies. Your comment gives me hope – do you have any references, or information/websites I can show my family? Thanks heaps!
It is difficult not to make “terrible assumptions about [your] intentions” after examining the scientifically absurd claims you make about your product; noting your failure to provide any objective scientific evidence that it works; noting your hiding of objective scientific evidence in your possession related to the question of whether it works; and noting that when asked for objective evidence that it works, you start talking about the toxic chemicals in laundry detergents, which, true or not, is completely irrelevant to the question of whether your product actually cleans clothes.
Now to me this seems like a delightful way to keep overconsumptive Americans from polluting the water supply while at the same time helping to ease the burden that excess cash has on the overly gullible.
I just read your site and feel equally duped…I ordered the magnets but have not received anything yet, nor have I been able to find any response from the company for about 10 days. This failure to respond got me concerned and I began to look into the company. I only found your site so far. Wow, fooled again hoping to reach beyond the norm.
The Magnetic Laundry System is the new and groundbreaking way to get your garments clean. Essentially, the item is a set of two blue laundry magnets that clean your clothing and remove stains, all without having the usage of detergent. By placing the magnets around the walls of the washing device via each cycle, you will have the opportunity to obtain totally thoroughly clean clothes.
This product has me purely amazed! As someone who has mcs, and finds it frustrating to have to wash new clothes numerous times to get the chemicals out, or used ones even MORE because of the highly scented detergents in them, this product is truly a MIRACLE product! I thought the green wash ball was good, but this blows that, and anything else I’ve ever tried out of the water! If you don’t have mcs, you might not understand the lengths go to, to try to get our clothes rid of these toxins.
MWT works by forcing oppositely-charged ions to move in opposite directions in the water, promoting collisions of charge-pairs that result in the formation of crystallization nuclei within the water. This is the basis of magnetohydrodynamics and is known in plasmas (ionized gases) but not in liquid solutions. Dissolved ions with their hydration shells are too large to diffuse rapidly through the hydrogen-bonded structure of water.
How can it perform? The MLS System works below a singular implies of water maintenance through immediate software of magnetic pressure. The system helps the water to pull out the grime, grease and odors from the fibers of the clothes without having harmful chemical compounds that break down the fibers of your clothing. Water has extended been identified as the “universal solvent”. The MLS System incorporates effective, specially calibrated magnetism to aid alter the fundamental nature of water and boost its organic solvency.
There are very few scientifically validated reports of successful MWT installations in the mainstream scientific and engineering literature. Given the potential economic benefits of a widely-applicable chemical-free softening process, especially in arid regions such as the U.S. southwest, one would expect a lot more scientific and engineering support.
Some researchers hypothesize that magnetic treatment affects the nature of hydrogen bonds between water molecules. They report changes in water properties such as light absorbance, surface tension, and pH (e.g., Joshi and Kamat 1966; Bruns et al. 1966; Klassen 1981). However, these effects have not always been found by later investigators (Mirumyants et al. 1972). Further, the characteristic relaxation time of hydrogen bonds between water molecules is estimated to be much too fast and the applied magnetic field strengths much too small for any such lasting effects, so it is unlikely that magnetic water treatment affects water molecules (Lipus et al. 1994).

Water “hardness” is a measure of dissolved mineral content. As water seeps through soil and aquifers, it often contacts minerals such as limestone and dolomite. Under the right conditions, small amounts of these minerals will dissolve in the ground water and the water will become “hard.” Water hardness is quantified by the concentration of dissolved hardness minerals. The most common hardness minerals are carbonates and sulfates of magnesium and calcium. Water with a total hardness mineral concentration of less than about 17 parts per million (ppm) is categorized as “soft” by the Water Quality Association (Harrison 1993). “Moderately hard” water has a concentration of 60 to 120 ppm. “Very hard” water exceeds 180 ppm.
The company selling these magnets is counting on the fact that by the time the detergents are completely washed out (it takes several wash cycles) and it becomes obvious that the magnets are useless, the 90-day money-back guarantee will have expired, and most people will be too lazy to fight with the company to get their money back.

The effects of magnetic fields on water was discovered in the early 1900’s by Danish Physicist Hendrick Antoon Lorenz.  He received the Nobel Prize in 1902 for his discovery of the effects of magnetic fields on water.
As water moves through the induced magnetic field, the static charge on the water molecules is changed from negative to positive due to current being generated by the moving water (Faraday’s Law). The current produced by the flow also causes some water molecules to ionize (dissociate), forming hydronium ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH-). Oxidation (corrosion) is prevented by the physical fact that the negative oxygen is repelled by the ground negative (cathodically protected) pipe. Negative scale ions are also repelled. (Basic law of Physics: similarities repel) If walls of negative pipe are contaminated with hard deposits (scale), positive hydronium ions work to convert hard deposits (scale) into soft deposits (aragonite), which are eventually removed and precipitate out into the tower basin. In 1997 Trade-Net, sold a laundry ball product (the Blue Laundry Ball) in various US states. Trade-Net claimed that the blue liquid inside their balls was structured water “that emits a negative charge through the walls of the container into your laundry water.” “This causes the water molecule cluster to disassociate, allowing much smaller individual water molecules to penetrate into the innermost part of the fabric.” Dennis Barnum, a professor of inorganic chemistry at Portland State University, said that the liquid was just water with a blue dye and couldn’t possibly have the effect claimed by the manufacturer. Barnum also said that the claims were “gibberish” and used scientific terms in ways that sounded educated to the layman but didn’t make any real sense. The Oregonian tested the balls, and found they washed marginally better than hot water with no detergent, and worse than using detergent.[12]
Unlike the laundry balls, though, which at least save you money on more-or-less worthless detergents; the fuel magnets (and magnetic air filters) appear to have no benefits to those who aren’t selling them.
I use vinegar for softener & aluminum balls in the dryer with no use of dryer sheets. No vinegar smell. If there are stains from kids, pre treat them & then wash. You could also use essential oils in the detergent.

Also…what about the people who have magnetic allergic reactions? I myself had never heard of this but one time my mother used this magnetic “sheet” under the mattress pad that was advertised to help with body aches and my Nana woke the next morning covered in hives!

As we need water and not chemicals to clean the clothes, Magnetic Laundry System does something with the water that cleans your clothes. When the water rotates in the tub with the highly magnetic molecules, it cleans faster and better than any other detergent.

WaterLiberty is a black mica extract that is claimed to remove heavy metals, fluoride, aluminum, and other deadly toxins from your tap water. In addition to neutralizing these contaminants, WaterLiberty is also claimed to help your body’s aches and pains disappear, while removing carbon waste.

A seller of various commercial items was touting the magnetic balls for washing clothes. Being skeptical I proceeded to research the internet for serious criticism and found your excellent article that dispelled the hype and left me grateful to you.

According to the WaterLiberty.com website, in 1968, Dr. Asao Shimanishi found that biotite, also known as black mica, can help water naturally cleanse itself of contaminants, due to its high concentrations of sulfate materials and natural magnetic properties. However, like many other nutritional supplements we’ve reviewed here at HighYa, WaterLiberty.com claims that this information hasn’t been made available to the public because of “corporate greed, and because of the ignorance of the leaders of industries, and political resistance.”

After 5 emails and phone calls I was told I would get the full refund, but not the s & h! So you pay for a product that does not work, pay for the s & h to receive it and pay for the s & h to send it back to the merchant, looks like the post office is the only entity benefiting from this classic scam!

Absolutely.  Yes they are magnets so you don’t want to go rubbing them directly against the sensitive computerized parts of your washer.  But throwing them in the wash won’t impact your machine in the least.

Many of the reports supporting MWT seem to be in rather obscure journals and conference proceedings. This may in part reflect the fact that water treatment is far from being a “leading edge” science— despite its importance and the fact that much remains unknown about the mechanisms of precipitation and scale formation.

I am also environmentally “aware” and do my best to pick up trash, etc., whenever I can…and since I am in some wooded areas caring for feral cats, I end up with a pretty good haul of trash or recycling sometimes. So anything that can help us stop polluting the earth is an easy decision for me…especially when all you have to do is stick a couple of magnets in your washer….and no longer worry about what your detergent is doing to the drain field, or adding one more huge jug to the recycling bin every week.

Hi Jonathan, thank you for this blog. I almost considered going for it after seeing a Facebook ad but had a bad feeling about it. My one point of confusion is how it got so many 4 and 5 star reviews from verified purchasers on Amazon. Any thoughts on the matter?

Another option is to pre-soak your clothes or to use a stain removal pre-treatment.  I’ve tried all three.  For really tough stains I typically fall back to a spot treatment before washing.  But I’ve gotten butter, oil, grease, and dirt out using just the magnets.  Pretty impressive.

The clothes and sheets I tested all seemed to be clean after the wash cycle, including a white pillowcase that had some leftover mascara smudged on it (ladies, you know the struggle). It was a bummer that the laundry didn’t smell fresh, but then I reminded myself the fresh smell I’m used to isn’t exactly right out of nature. So unless I start seeing a problem, or my friends stage an intervention, I’m going to assume my clothes are clean enough. Especially since I already have $75 into this new laundry system.

(2) Fifty bucks a set is more typical, but even that has to be an outrageous markup inasmuch as there’s an outfit in Hong Kong that will sell them to you for $3.60 a pair. (Minor drawback: you have to go to Hong Kong to pick them up.)

Still, there is no scientific consensus about the mechanism of how MWT might work. This is not surprising; the entire process by which ions form precipitation nuclei is poorly understood. “Bare” ions do not exist in solution, but are protected by a hydration shell of loosely-attached water molecules and surrounded by an electric double layer of counter-ions. They do not simply come together to form precipitates. My best guess, based on the most recent literature, is that applied magnetic and electric fields might distort the double-layer in such a way as to promote nuclei formation, particularly if certain other ions or dissolved substances are present.

Magnetic Laundry System is an incredible product that helps you get your clothes cleaned without even a single drop of toxic laundry detergent. It contains an independent lab testing report from one of the huge testing companies of the world. This product verifies unequivocally that this Magnetic Laundry System cleans all the garments, and does not damage the colours or the tensile strength of your fabrics. It is protected and tested by two patents. This product works as good as the environmentally friendly versions of pure detergent. It works on the front as well as on the top loading washers. You can bid farewell to all your worries about the toxic detergents for the rest of your life.

That blog has exactly one article on it: a review of the Magnetic Laundry System. And it’s not actually a “review,” it’s actually a marketing piece trying to convince you to buy the Magnetic Laundry System.

Washing your clothes without the use of harsh detergents is amazing technology! Patent protection has been applied for, though we are not the first to understand the value of a magnetic field to change the molecular structure of water. The process of using magnets to reduce the surface tension of water is not new dating back many centuries, but we believe we are the first to do it this way. Instead of selling you vast quantities of harmful chemicals in an ongoing manner, we offer our magnetic hydro-nomic system that lasts forever!

ABI, a Japanese outfit, offers a Cells Alive System (CAS) whose purpose is to improve the industrial-scale fast-freezing process by inhibiting the growth of ice crystals that tend to break down cell walls when foods are frozen. The idea is to employ a magnetic field to allow the food to be supercooled (that is, cooled below the freezing point without forming ice), and then turning off the field causing the ice to form so rapidly that only very small crystals are able to grow. A fine idea, except for the fact that I know of no evidence that a magnetic field is able to alter the freezing point of water. The CAS promotion claims that the magnetic field by aligning “the magnetic moment of the electrons” — which strikes me as scientific nonsense, given that all 10 electrons in H2O are paired so that the molecule has a zero magnetic moment. A 2006 article in a South African food processing magazine describes the process in more detail, but confuses the issue by invoking the use of an alternating electric field as well (which should have the same effect as a microwave oven) and making the unlikely claim that a glass of water frozen by this method will not break.

I appreciate your comments. I also very much appreciate you taking the time to perform some experiments. The only thing negative I could say is that I do think you are overstating your feelings in some cases and letting that sorta get in the way of your research (which is pretty awesome). But all that being said, it IS your site and you can do that.

To remove stains, regular detergent enhances the water’s already present magnetic force. Now, you don’t need to use detergent to improve the force, especially when magnets are a better, more economical, and environmentally friendly solution. The magnets cause the water to pull out the dirt, grease, odors, and other compounds from your clothing, without harming the fibers. Moreover, you’ll notice that the results are just as effective or are even better than traditional detergents. As the brand explains, water is the universal solvent and now, you can tap into its power with this revolutionary and effective magnet system.

1. Metallic elements (including copper and silver) in the activated ceramics [inside the device] release electrons which in turn produce ionized oxygen. This form of oxygen is a totally natural cleanser which breaks up dirt and organic compounds.

It is difficult to assess this paper. His experimental results are interesting (there are photographs of the crystals), but much of the interpretation strikes me as suspect. Even more off-putting is the quotation attributed to him in the section on agricultural applications.

Carbonates formed by heating water containing ≈120 mg(Ca)/l are characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Tests on 32 pairs of samples establish, at the 99.9% probability level, that drawing water through a static magnetic field (B≈0.1T, ∇B≈10 T/m) increases the aragonite/calcite ratio in the deposit. There is an incubation period of several hours, and memory of magnetic treatment extends beyond 200 h.
I’m a Mom of 4 very messy children. My boys play hard, all 4 of my kids help with all of the animals- Horses, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks… We all stink by the end of the day. And I work as a Realtor, so I need to be clean and not stink, not to mention it’s just a nice thing to do for everyone right? I was a total skeptic, but I was willing to give this a try. After the first load I was impressed with how clean everything was and I still continue to be impressed! I don’t want a lot of chemicals in or around my home, so this is a perfect alternative. Here are some before and after pictures of a typical pair of jeans worn by my 9 year old. The mud has dried on because I was too exhausted to do laundry when he came in the evening before. I washed them on a quick cycle for 26 minutes on cold with a full load and everything came out clean and fresh. I’m a believer.
There is no other Magnetic Laundry System as its formula is protected, verified and patented by two patents. The tests are not limited to the laboratories as the consumers who have used this product use words like: ‘Magic’, ‘Ecological’, ‘Clean’, ‘Savings’, ‘Incredible’, ‘Environmentally friendly’, ‘No stinky smell’ etc.
UPDATE: There’s an excellent description here of why the alleged science behind the Magnetic Laundry System is bunk.  It’s excellent because it’s both extremely clear and extremely succinct.  Money quote: “This is just crazy gobbledegook made to sound impressive so people who don’t have any chemistry education will be impressed.”  Follow the link for more.
I’m not going to blow smoke up your you-know-what and tell you this magnet system cured that problem overnight.  But I’ll tell you what DID happen.  After a couple months of washing without detergent, the smell of his nasty gym clothes actually got better.
Finally, the product is very easy to use. All you need to do is to stick it to the mental surroundings of your washing machine bin. In doing so, the product will clear out the stains, grime, dirt, and more as you put the machine into cycle.
There is a long history of the promotion of magnets to alleviate the “hardness” of mineral-containing waters, and particularly to control the deposition of scale in teapots, plumbing systems, evaporators, and boilers. There are now a large variety of devices on the market that claim to reduce scale deposition, and some claim to “soften” the water as well. The earlier devices mostly employed permanent magnets, but many now use alternating magnetic or electrostatic fields. The magnetic field surrounds the pipe at some point and penetrates it from all sides. This obviously limits its use to non-ferrous pipes such as copper or plastic.
It is worrisome that the U.S. Department of Energy, which also looks after nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons, should have its name associated with such sophomoric science. This is likely not an uncommon result of what happens when research organizations go grubbing for government money for projects in which neither they nor the sponsoring agency have scientifically competent personnel available to review the work.
Because the Magnetic Laundry System magnets are such a powerful cleaning technology, they will remove detergent scum from everywhere in the washer and your clothes might become blotched with the scum that is coming from the tub.  If this occurs, try washing them a few more times with the Magnetic Laundry System to see if they become clean again.  Just keep using the System and you won’t have to repeat the tub cleaning procedure ever again.
A: There is no scent added when using the Magnetic Laundry System. The truth is that clean clothes smell like nothing. They don’t smell like perfume. And most people significantly overkill with these scents.
* ‘Mineral’ washing balls allegedly work by using these minerals and magnets to change the properties of the They increase the pH balance of the water, and break down the molecules, both of which help the water be absorbed by the material, and therefore it gets right in there to clean out any dirt. * Detergent washing balls contain a tiny amount of liquid soap.

I have just used two magnets that I found lying around my house.one large, messaures 2 1/2 inches, just over 6 cos and weighs 340 grams ,then two smaller ones  to try and match the bigger one in strength. The washing appears clean and fresh.however the large magnet fell off the side wall of the machine,I stopped my machine and put it into a buttoned up pocket of a shirt. This had a bad effect as it has pitted the pocket.  I also had to separate the magnets at some stage as one of the smaller magnets had stuck to the big one, before I put it into the pocket! Does that happen with the commercial magnets you buy and is it OK to leave them stuck together? I did try to buy the magnets on line, but like so many things ,products, no one ships to Namibia!!
“I have been using Adya Clarity for 3 months now. I add the drops to a jug of tap water at night and in the morning I can see tiny particles of all the yucky stuff that is in the tap water floating around the bottom of the jug. I love the taste of the water, I also clean my fruits and veggies with it. I give it to my plants and my pet. Here is a picture I took of the contaminants at the bottom of my glass after adding Adya Clarity.“
Its not that everything you promote has issues, But the magnetic wash idea has been around for years and never stuck, except on the few that are led astray. There is a possibility I am wrong, in which case we won’t need shampoo, hand soap, toilet cleaners or washing machines, just a tub of water and magnets.
The smaller cluster size gives the water excellent cleaning properties, high solubility and good permeability. In other words, water clusters in smaller groups lead to a better absorption of water through the tiny open spaces or “pores” of the fabrics. This technology essentially enables and strengthens the water’s ability to ‘physically’ clean and rinse dirt off fabrics without the use of chemicals. Learn more.
I ordered magnets, never saw them !!! as a bonus offer I directed delivery to my 75yr. Old mother. The second set at $10 cheaper. The package was supposed to contain 2 magnets for washing clothes. Ins…tead it was something like tennis balls. For $50 plus to return was a nightmare with customer service. My origional order was out of stock they claimed , but charged me for it ahead of time. I waited over 2 months , when it finally arrived I had already demanded my refund / so I returned it unopened ! Not wanting to waste time with customer service again. My mom shipped me the gift I sent her to send back at a cost of $15 , then I shipped it back at $15 so post office made $45 on this product offer of buy second set at a discount….they substituted another product to send my mom, causing total confusion & long distance to explain to her. My refund took another 30 days from my cancellation ! They use your money people !!! See More
I have a Meile washer and Dryer front loads and can only use Purcell boxed soap and have no problems coming clean and always wash with cold water, never hot and they come out clean!!So Iwill stick with my Purcell soap and only need a 1/2 oz of soap!!no magnets for me!!I do like the nana towels to clean glass computer and I pad screens and windows, fire place glass ,microwave glass door and my glasses I wear love those towels!!
Chlorine is by far the most widely-employed agent for disinfecting municipal water supplies, and there is no question about its effectiveness in reducing water-borne disease. Unfortunately, this active element also reacts with some of the organic components present in certain water to generate small amounts of chlorinated products such as chloroform and chloramines which have been shown to be mutagens and may be carcinogens. Although there are no epidemiological studies that demonstrate an adverse effect of chlorinated water on human health, it is understandable that many people would prefer their drinking water to be chlorine-free, if only to reduce the unpleasant taste in localities where the chlorine content is especially high. This can usually be accomplished by activated charcoal filters, and in extreme cases, by boiling. Numerous vendors sell magnetic devices, often in the form of shower heads, that purport to remove the chlorine from the water. Their Web sites paint frightening pictures of the dire consequences of showering in water containing this poisonous element. Consider, for example, this breathless paragraph from one sales site, obviously intended for people the vendor considers so dumb that they will be impressed by all of the words being capitalized:
Many of the reports supporting MWT seem to be in rather obscure journals and conference proceedings. This may in part reflect the fact that water treatment is far from being a “leading edge” science— despite its importance and the fact that much remains unknown about the mechanisms of precipitation and scale formation.
The reason I’m being so specific is that I’ve seen some defenders of this technology that claim you get the benefits of soft water using their systems, but because of the way it works it doesn’t show any difference on standard water hardness tests. That is, it is pseudo-soft water, but acts like soft water for all practical purposes. Just the fact that they have a miracle solution, that involves magnets, and is resilient to empirical testing makes me extremely skeptical.

I appreciate your comments. I also very much appreciate you taking the time to perform some experiments. The only thing negative I could say is that I do think you are overstating your feelings in some cases and letting that sorta get in the way of your research (which is pretty awesome). But all that being said, it IS your site and you can do that.

A lot of articles appearing in the technical (as opposed to peer-reviewed scientific) literature are written by people whose apparent ignorance of physics and chemistry leads them to concoct unrealistic theories of how MWT might work.
Except for the LSBU source described immediatly below, most of these publications should be generally understandable by non-specialists. For more references that pertain to experiments on model systems which have appeared in the scientific literature, please see my water science page.
Let me be the first to denounce this “clinical trial” as scientific fraud and publicly accuse Fenestra Research and Water Liberty of faking the data. What we are witnessing here is pure scientific fraud and marketing fraud in all its glory.
Also, do you use any of the stain pre-treaters that the manufacturer recommends for tough stains? Has it occurred to you that those treatments are in fact concentrated detergent, and that it’s not the magnets that are getting your clothes clean, but rather the detergent?

Our results indicate that magnetic and copper bracelets are generally ineffective for managing pain, stiffness and physical function in osteoarthritis. Reported therapeutic benefits are most likely attributable to non-specific placebo effects. However such devices have no major adverse effects and may provide hope.

“Purchase Miracle Magnetic Laundry System Of Life Review laundry magnets scam”

As is the case with so much quackery, much of the actual selling of these worthless products is done by thousands of independent dealers recruited by typically not-very-educated individuals who are as credulous as their customers. The more ambitious but unlettered can even purchase mail-order “Registered Magnetic Therapist” and similar degrees. But in recent years, this quackery has moved into the mainstream as Amway and the Canadian Shopper’s Drug Mart chain have begun peddling this snake oil.
I need to know how to properly return There is a P.O. address on the package it came in, but always like to make contact with the company before sending it in the mail. Many times there is a different address in which to return it, often a RMA #.
At worst, the products are completely useless’. Even worse, a laundry ball can completely ruin your clothing, and render your washing machine useless. If you ever get the chance, pick up a laundry ball and have a feel of the casing. Cheap plastic, right? When that cheap plastic is spun round and round in the washing machine over and over again, it’s inevitably going to break down. And what’s going to happen when all those ceramic beads and magnets are let loose in the washer? That’s right, you’re going to end up with snagged fibres and damaged machine internals.
It is difficult to assess this paper. His experimental results are interesting (there are photographs of the crystals), but much of the interpretation strikes me as suspect. Even more off-putting is the quotation attributed to him in the section on agricultural applications.

This kind of “activation” is not yet known to Chemistry! Further, the minerals are not “suspended”, but are dissolved and already exist as ions. And the major ions of Ca and Mg tend to reduce the effectiveness of detergents.

“the principle of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) lowers surface tension of water, creating greater solubility and penetration, which stimulates root systems. Soil Eradicator sold separately, is our citrus enzyme alternative to chemical stain removers like Spray-n-Wash.is an inexpensive, natural and chemical-free way to remove stains. To replace detergent, you need only the magnets. Soil Eradicator is an enhancement that is only beneficial or useful to remove difficult stains. That said however, you might find it worthwhile (as I do) to add an ounce of Soil Eradicator to every wash for an extra measure of cleaning and natural stain removal.

Perhaps you missed the part where many highly educated, knowledgeable scientists with training in this area — you know, instead of crackpot herbalists like you — have debunked the idea that throwing a couple of magnets into a washing machine will get the clothes cleaner.
Yeah, the friction wouldn’t be a factor since the magnets would stick to the metal sides of the washer. And if the stains came out, wouldn’t that mean this system worked better than just water alone (since it sounds like they were stains, which means they’ve already been washed in water or in water and detergent)? It sounds like the enzymes must be a part of the system, too, so that’s why I want to know more about how long/how many loads they are good for. Interesting, anyway.

Dollar stores in my area sell these, but there is an even better, and cheaper alternative. Take a large piece of aluminum foil, and crumple it into a ball. Make it firm, but not too tight. Toss this into the dryer with your clothes. As it spins around, it helps to keep your clothes from clumping. It also removes static cling, and because the aluminum heats up, it helps smooth out wrinkles. It’s cheap, chemical – free, and the reusable ball lasts virtually forever. If you use this and vinegar in your final rinse water, you do not need liquid fabric softener or softener sheets.

“Magnetic neuromedicine: an ‘attractive’ promise” by Frank Adams, a physician and neuropharmacologist, in the American Journal of Pain Management (AJPM), 1998;8:17-18. This article reports some positive clinical results and calls for more comprehensive studies.
The front fabric is wrinkled/loose, not sleek like in the photo. Color is disappointingly a very dark brown, like dark chocolate or coffee grounds, not as pictured, see photo. Two stars for it’s nice size and sturdiness.
What I find most frightening is that your article was posted in 2009. It is now the backside of 2017, and this is the ONLY thing I have read that has discredited the effectiveness of the magic magnets!!
I don’t want to attack the magnetic laundry system, I just want to return the product. I have been trying to find out how to properly do that. I called 2 times 3 weeks ago and just recently left 4 telephone messages and no one has returned my calls in 2 days.
Oh, and the magnets stayed right where I put them, even with the dog bed/pillow in the wash. I was sure they were going to be stuck together or on the bottom or something. We do have a very old machine……at least 20 years old. I know the newer models sometimes don’t have metal basins anymore. It’s not an issue if they do come off though, or you can put them inside a sock before the wash starts. It doesn’t matter if they stick together.
According to the brand, a package of two units of the laundry system can be used for many years and aside from saving you the hassle of having to buy detergent, it can save you a great deal of money as well. The system also does not use any chemicals or harmful compounds to provide you with results. As the brand explains, with this product, you no longer need to rely upon harmful formulas that contain common ingredients such as pesticides, imitation estrogen, and other toxins. Research shows that these toxins not only lead to harm over the long term, but they are not good for your clothes either.
Water Liberty works with Trees for the Future, an organization that helps communities around the world plant trees. For every pack of NanoTowels purchased, one tree is planted. Join us and plant your tree today! Bit.ly/nanotowels Please share! Bit.ly/nanotowels
You usually don’t need to use as much detergent as the company recommends. I start with the minimum recommended by the company, it usually works just fine for all my clothes. We own boats and my husband comes home with really gross dirty clothes and I will add a little extra then. Same goes with dish detergent. When I cured myself of filling both detergent cups in my dishwasher, my dishes were still clean, I just didn’t go through as much detergent
Note that only the “effective” or “subjective” hardness is claimed to be reduced through magnetic treatment. No magnesium or calcium is removed from the water by magnetic treatment. Instead, the claim is that the magnetic field decreases the tendency of the dissolved minerals to form scale. Even though the dissolved mineral concentration indicates the water is still hard, magnetically treated water supposedly behaves like soft water.
An extremely effective natural alternative: Numerous studies show that a straight 5 percent solution of vinegar—such as you can buy in the supermarket—kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of mold, and 80% of germs (viruses).
I’ll go look for the link again. In theory, they’re specially calibrated to enhance water’s ability to disolve the dirt. Just taking what you just said about plain water-washing and giving it a little oomph. My one concern was that the reviews all said how soft the clothes came out and I’m wondering if the magnets are breaking down the fabric more quickly? Not that it REALLY matters—I don’t exactly have heirloom clothes or anything! But if we could use the magnets in the washer and just throw in a couple felt balls into the dryer, that would at least make one part of our housekeeping green! (I can’t line-dry—not an option according to our association even if there were room on the tiny deck.)

“Purchase Magnetic Laundry Cleaning Texas laundry magnets”

With multiple permanent magnets arranged in a unique configuration, the MLS generates a powerful magnetic field to do just that, to change the surface tension of the water, – just like detergent does, only without all the toxic chemicals.
I bought these magnets 2 years ago, along with wool balls for the dryer. I was so excited and eager for great results. The first 2 months were great! My sheets felt so clean and smelled wonderful from the essential oils I used on the wool balls. My clothes felt so clean! But in the 4th month, I would enter my home and smell a “dirty” smell, which is unusual because I am a clean freak! Little by little, my son’s athletic clothes especially, were not coming out clean, but seemed to have a build up of dirt that wasn’t being removed from the washing. Now, I was looking into odor control products, then stain removing products, etc. I felt like I was reinventing the wheel. Then a friend of mine, very into natural products, sent me an article on how detergents are crucial for clean laundry, and the article explained the chemistry behind it. Not to say you can’t us a natural detergent, but all in all, I stopped using the magnets. Then, if you think about it, how do the clothes truly get rinsed clean if the magnets are still in the water during the rinse cycle?
One of the pluses of traditional detergent is it’s ability to help cover up less appealing odors, such as those that come from sweaty gym clothes.  For this I had the perfect test.  My husband has workout clothes that he’s been using for going on 10 years.
I’ve really been enjoying my magnets. It makes doing laundry even faster b/c you remove a whole step in the process (measuring/adding detergent). It doesn’t seem like much, but seriously, now I just toss clothes in and push start!
People are stupid, so they don’t realize that washing clothes in plain water is, by itself, pretty good at getting them clean. People are stupid, so they don’t realize that the “enzymatic stain removers” that the Magnetic Laundry System people tell you to use on stains are, actually, detergents, which means that when you spray those on stains in your laundry, you’re putting detergent in your laundry, not washing it with nothing but magnets. People are stupid, so they don’t understand that “enzymatic stain removers” plus water would clean their clothes just as well as “enzymatic stain removers” plus water plus magnets.
Clever chemical companies have been telling for years that the only way to get anything clean is with their toxic cleaner but the truth is that water is a universal solvent it’s the one doing all the cleaning, all detergent does is enhance waters already existing power.

I’ll post back my her reaction to this experiment if she goes along with it.
placing corn seeds in the “center of the paramagnetic center of Stonehenge” resulted in 20-40% larger plants, suggesting that “restoring magnetism is the key to increased life force in all organic matter”. [link]
Duffy (1977) provides experimental evidence that scale suppression in magnetic water treatment devices is due not to magnetic effects on the fluid, but to the dissolution of small amounts of iron from the magnet or surrounding pipe into the fluid. Iron ions can suppress the rate of scale formation and encourage the growth of a softer scale deposit. Busch et al. (1986) measured the voltages produced by fluids flowing through a commercial magnetic treatment device. Their data support the hypothesis that a chemical reaction driven by the induced electrical currents may be responsible for generating the iron ions shown by Duffy to affect scale formation.
Frankly, I am so tired of Amazon asking for reviews that I never do them anymore. But, these darn things work just like they claim and even if I was not going to be saving a lot of money, I now really like that idea of clean clothes that smell like nothing at all except fresh water. This product deserved this review.
Young I. Cho, a mechanical engineer at Drexel University, reported[⇒] a reduction in surface tension of up to 8% in hard water that had been treated by a 0.16 T permanent magnetic field; use of a 600-hz alternating field gave similar reductions. Unfortunately, this article does not provide enough information to assess the statistical validity of the results, which, it should be emphasized, do not apply to pure water. Also, this work depended on capillary rise observations, which although theoretically proportional to surface tension, do not actually measure it.

Magnetic water softeners claim that their magnetic fields can help remove scale from the washing machine and pipes, and prevent new limescale from adhering.[11] Some companies claim to remove hardness ions from hard water, or to precipitate the molecules in the water so they won’t “stick” to the pipes, or to reduce the surface tension of water.[11] The claims are dubious, the scientific basis is unclear, the working mechanism is vaguely defined and understudied, and high-quality studies report negative results.[11] The reputation of these products is further damaged by the pseudoscientific explanations that promoters keep putting forward.[11]
